Snoring occurs when muscles in the body relax. When the esophagus is relaxed the air passage narrows. Air going through a narrowed passage can cause vibration within the throat, mouth and nasal passages to cause the snoring noise. Issues include disrupting your sleep partner, interrupted sleep, sore throat and dry mouth. The most serious cases can cause sleep apnea, a possibly dangerous condition.
Snoring is most common in REM sleep and can be made worse by being overweight, certain medications, alcohol and aging (we all lose muscle tone while we age).
Here are some common remedies:
- Lifestyle changes including limiting alcohol, not eating less than 4 hours before bedtime and losing weight
- Devices like nasal strips, dental inserts, and over the counter medications
- Surgery (for the most extreme cases)
Your choice of pillow can also help reduce snoring. Choose pillows that elevate the head above the body and encourage sleeping on your side.
